We inform you that the Chair in Global Neuroscience and Social Change at the Universidad Internacional de Valencia  will collaborate in the African Spinal Microsurgery Program: LUMBAR COURSE, a course-workshop that will take place from October 26th to 29th, at the Mnazi Mmoja NED Institute in Zanzibar (Tanzania) and which seeks to improve the skills of COSECSA (College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa) neurosurgeons and residents in the care of patients with different spinal conditions.

Among the experts who will provide the training, the presence of Dr. Paul H. Young, founding father of spinal microsurgery and the use of specialized exploration and dissection techniques in this field, such as microscopes and surgical simulators, stands out. In addition, Dr. Young in the course will be attended by Dr. Jose Piquer Belloch, head of the Neurosurgery Service of the Hospital Univ. de la Ribera, President of the NED Foundation and co-director of the Chair in Global Neuroscience and Social Change, who also to teaching training, is part of the organizing committee.

The Chair in Global Neuroscience and Social Change has been created and developed by VIU together with the NED Foundation, and this course-workshop is part of its purpose of promoting teaching, research and dissemination in the field of neuroscience and social change. Within these objectives, a special priority is given to the “Global Surgery 2030” program, seeking through Neurosciences and Neurosurgery the improvement of both medical-surgical care in general, and, especially, its development in the countries low-income, as surgery is an essential factor to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

The Chair developed by both institutions is part of the development and implementation of the Strategic Research Plan of VIU, a transversal project with which it covers all areas of knowledge of the University and that will allow VIU to position itself as a reference university in the generation and knowledge transmission.
