The research project “Determination of the Neuropsychological profile in patients with paediatric hydrocephalus living in Zanzibar (Tanzania)” has been approved in the last call for internal research projects VIU 2021-2022. This project integrates two branches of Neurosciences such as Neuropsychology and Neurosurgery to investigate the neuropsychological factors associated with hydrocephalus, a disease especially prevalent in low-income countries.

For the head of the project and co-director of the VIU-NED Chair, Dr  Maria Jose Garcia Rubio, the award of this grant is an important landmark. It adds another line of research to the work programe of the VIU-NED Chair in the context of the Global Surgery 2030 initiative. This project will focus on a vulnerable population group and is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. For his part, the President of the NED Foundation and co-director of the VIU-NED Chair, Dr Jose Piquer, believes that the results of this project will serve to improve the care of patients with hydrocephalus in Africa and elsewhere.

The VIU-NED Chair in Global Neuroscience and Social Change aims to promote teaching, research and dissemination of neuroscience and social change. This Chair integrates the medical and humanitarian work of the NED Foundation and the training capacity of the International University of Valencia (VIU) to promote the study of the different branches of Neuroscience. The Chair prioritizes the ‘Global Surgery 2030’ programe, an initiative launched in 2015 by an international commission of experts to improve the health and surgical care of all people, with a special emphasis on the most undeserved populations.
