Millones de pacientes con laceraciones traumáticas no son tratados anualmente en África del Este. Dado que estas heridas no suelen representar una amenaza para la vida del paciente, se consideran menos prioritarias frente a otras complicaciones. En consecuencia, el tratamiento de pacientes con heridas a menudo se retrasa, las bacterias pueden proliferar originando la infección y sepsis y provocando en muchos casos la muerte del paciente, en su mayoría niños.
